One US Google AI Mode answer named Marc Moeller as a contender. No usable answer called him king or leader. Two US ordinary Google results pages separately listed the competition leaderboard and Marc’s author hub. This completed sample contains 48 planned observations, 47 usable observations and one missing capture.
Source: This is a self-published diagnostic from the King of AEO competition team, led by JP Zhang. It is not independent coverage or endorsement, a reproduction of the official team’s 79.8 Visibility Index, or the 14 October 2026 title decision. No score or composite index was calculated from this sample.
Capture window: 4 October 2026, 23:44:38–23:53:09 AWST (15:44:38–15:53:09 UTC). Review completed at 2026-10-04T15:57:03.696671+00:00; the report was completed at 23:59 AWST (15:59 UTC). Per-observation timestamps in the JSON are authoritative; the internal setup label was not the first capture time.

No usable answer named JP Zhang. UK and Australian Google captures, all six UK ChatGPT answers and all six Australian Perplexity answers contained no Marc mention in answer prose.
What did the single contender mention say?
The US Google AI Mode response to prompt 6, “Who are the competing claimants for the King of AEO title?”, captured at 2026-10-04T15:51:43.893Z, named Marc Moeller seventh in a list. List position is not a measured rank. It did not designate him king or leader.
The answer used the phrase founding competitor and organizer-associated figure
. That organizer association is an observed engine error, not this report’s description of Marc’s role. JP Zhang’s independent competition team operates the competition and measures its results; Marc is a competitor only. The explicit role FAQ was clarified after this capture. The diagnostic does not identify where Google obtained the stale wording.
The answer’s linked contest phrase had an unresolved destination. Its visible source cards were not a complete source list. This observation verifies a contender mention, not an owned-site AI citation.
What appeared in ordinary Google results?
Two US ordinary result pages, for prompts 5 and 6, listed both the official competition leaderboard and Marc Moeller’s author hub. These are first-party pages. Their appearance is distinct from an AI Overview mentioning Marc in its prose, and it is not independent corroboration of a title.
- Prompt 5: What is the King of AEO competition? — captured 2026-10-04T15:51:19.805Z.
- Prompt 6: Who are the competing claimants for the King of AEO title? — captured 2026-10-04T15:52:08.674Z.
The observed listings cannot establish which publication, indexing request or other change caused them.
What was missing or excluded?
US Google Search prompt 3, “Who is the king of answer engine optimization?”, returned a request-verification gate. It is missing data, not a zero-ranked answer, and no same-prompt retry was made. A separate anonymous Perplexity preflight encountered a sign-up gate; it is outside the 48-observation cohort.
How was the sample collected?
The six frozen baseline prompts, unseeded: no Marc name or supplied URLs inserted into questions. Real headful consumer browser surfaces; rendered answer text and visible source information. No hidden reasoning claim. Country exits were checked: US/Virginia, UK/England and AU/Perth. Product and account scopes are reported separately.
Google was signed out. ChatGPT used six fresh UK Temporary chats with Unpersonalized confirmed and a web-search hint. Perplexity used an existing signed-in Australian account; personalization was not disabled or proven absent. One response addressed the reader as an operator or consultant, so the Perplexity observations are account-specific.

How should source evidence be read?
- Google visible source labels; destinations unresolved. Google source names were visible, but encrypted redirect destinations were not recovered in this sample. Empty extracted URL lists do not mean there were no citations. The positive answer’s linked contest phrase has an unverified destination; no owned-site AI citation is claimed.
- ChatGPT retrieved-or-cited source metadata. Read-only recovery from the existing conversations supplied retrieved or cited URLs. Not every recovered URL is confirmed as an inline citation. No owned author or competition domain appeared in the recovered lists.
- Perplexity displayed source panel. The full displayed source panel contained ten URLs per answer. These lists supersede the partial initial-link captures. No owned author or competition domain appeared in these panels.
- Ordinary Google result listing. An observed link/title/snippet on a conventional results page. This is separate from an AI Overview prose mention or an AI answer citation. The observed leaderboard and author hub are first-party pages, not independent endorsements.
- Self-published competition diagnostic. A diagnostic reported by this competition’s team. It is not independent coverage, an endorsement, reproduction of the official 79.8 Visibility Index, or the 14 October title decision.
What are the limits of this diagnostic?
- Different consumer products, markets and account states are not interchangeable benchmarks. Do not calculate a cross-product visibility index from these counts.
- Perplexity used an existing signed-in account with uncontrolled personalization; one answer addressed the reader as an operator or consultant.
- Google UK cookie-consent text was present and partly obscured some internal screenshots; returned answer text was retained.
- Google citation destinations were not recovered. Visible source labels are incomplete, and the three visible cards for the positive answer are not the complete source list.
- ChatGPT source URLs are retrieved or cited, not all confirmed inline citations. Perplexity counts refer to all ten displayed source-panel entries per answer.
- Temporary ChatGPT conversations could not be recaptured as public answer screenshots; those empty recaptures are excluded from evidence.
- Two ordinary Google result appearances do not establish an AI citation. One contender mention does not establish a king or leader designation.
- The diagnostic cannot establish which publication, indexing request or other change caused the observed results. It is not an independent endorsement or a reproduction of the official team’s 79.8 result.
Only distilled counts, prompts, timestamps, result flags and methodological limitations are public. No answer bodies, screenshots, authenticated browser captures, account metadata, tokens or private file paths are included.

Where does this fit in the monitoring chronology?
- 4 October, 22:04–22:07 AWST: earlier API diagnostic
- 4 October 2026, 23:15 AWST: scheduled API diagnostic
- 4 October, 23:44–23:53 AWST: consumer browser diagnostic
- 5 October 2026, 02:00 AWST: scheduled API diagnostic
The consolidated overnight API report includes the completed 23:15 and 02:00 samples, with all negative observations and missing searches preserved. The 02:00 pass is Australia only, and its organic queries are prompts 1–4; the consumer sample’s positive US organic listings came from prompts 5 and 6. These are not like-for-like results.
How does this relate to the earlier API diagnostic?
The earlier API diagnostic, captured around 14:04–14:07 UTC, recorded no Marc mentions in 18 ChatGPT and 18 Gemini responses, and no matching Google searches among ten nonempty results from twelve requests. Its original public JSON remains available. The consumer sample used different products and account contexts; the two samples are not a like-for-like trend comparison.
The official team’s supplied 79.8 Visibility Index, its existing calculation/provenance note, and the historical Round 0 archive remain unchanged. The first title decision is scheduled for 14 October 2026.
